"The Standard & Poor’s lost about 8.5% for the month, its worst in history, surpassing the 7.7% decline in January of 1970. And unfortunately, January, more often than not, is a harbinger of things to come for markets — it proved as much in 2008, and has predicted the outcome of the year more often than not. According to the Stock Trader’s Almanac, since 1950, the January indicator has scored only five major errors — years where the performance in the first month of the year was markedly different from the end-of-year performance. There are 10 other years in which the average diverged from its year-end result, but the S&P gained or lost no more than 5% in those years for a relatively flat performance"
